Book of Morphology

1 — The Alphabetical Letters

1. How many alphabetical letters are there?

There are twenty-eight alphabetical letters, the first being alif and the last yāʾ. They are of two kinds: sun letters and moon letters.

2. What are the sun letters?

They are the letters before which the lām of al- disappears in pronunciation, while the following consonant is doubled. They are fourteen:

t, ṯ, d, ḏ, r, z, s, š, ṣ, ḍ, ṭ, ẓ, l, n.

Thus one says al-šams, al-turāb, al-ṯaur, and al-dār, and similar expressions, by assimilating the lām in pronunciation to a consonant of the same kind as the letter following it.

3. What are the moon letters?

They are the letters before which the lām of al- remains pronounced. They are fourteen:

ʾ, b, ǧ, ḥ, ḫ, ʿ, ġ, f, q, k, m, h, w, y.

Thus one says al-qamar, al-ǧabal, and al-kitāb, and similar expressions, retaining the pronunciation of the lām.
